Weltevreden Estate – Stellenbosch’s best kept secret!

We held our recent Friendraising event at Weltevreden estate and I was reminded once again just why it’s one of my all-time favourite spots. Not only were we able to host a beautiful High Tea in their maze area (it’s perfect for private functions), but our hubbies and kids were welcomed at their carnival play area just a few metres away, too. It was the perfect set-up!

If you haven’t been before, Weltevreden Estate should be on the top of your list! As a parent, I think it’s one of the few places in Stellenbosch that’s the whole package for parents and children. Their colourful carnival play area is brilliantly put-together and would exceed any child’s expectations. The staff are wonderful and helpful and then, just metres away, you have Jonkershuis, which is the perfect spot for having meetings, birthdays, baby showers, or catch-ups with friends. Not to mention their delicious food and wine offering. Simply put, everything just works.

About the estate and Jonkershuis

A Stellenbosch homestead that dates back as far as 1692, Weltevreden was first awarded National Monument and Heritage Status in 1975 and prides itself on being a wonderful destination for functions and conferences in the Stellenbosch area. Nestled in the shadow of the magnificent Simonsberg Mountain, the estate is a mere five-minute drive from Stellenbosch.
Besides the picturesque estate itself, my new favourite place to meet friends is Jonkershuis. Not only is it metres away from the child-friendly carnival area, but I love that I can sit outside in a beautiful and comfortable lounge area and enjoy an uninterrupted adult conversation while my toddler enjoys the specially-curated play area on the lawn in front of me.

The carnival area

Besides the beautiful Jonkershuis, the carnival-inspired play area is a big bonus for us, because there are so many activities for kids of all ages. There’s a big playground among beautiful natural surrounds, a lot of shade, a build-a-pizza area, trampolines and two big jungle gyms. It’s a great place to host kids’ parties too, because the space and its design was really considered for both adults and children (we held our daughter’s 2nd birthday celebration here).

Art at Weltevreden

The art-in-the-garden really caught my eye – it’s nice to see that it wasn’t just “added” to the outside area as an afterthought. The interior of the Manor House is also beautifully decorated with unique and characteristic pieces of Stellenbosch art. Through a combination of brilliant innovation and careful, historical consideration, this heritage site has been transformed into a destination that really has to be seen to believed.

The Stellenbosch Mom Stamp of Approval

  • Safe: From the entrance straight through to the restaurant and the play area, one thing is certain – children’s safety is of utmost importance! There are also very professional and helpful staff almost around every corner who would gladly walk with the kids or keep an eye if necessary.
  • Socially responsible: Weltevreden uplifts the community by creating job opportunities for those living in the surrounding areas.
  • Sustainable: Recycling waste material and using eco-friendly paper for menus are at the top of their sustainability list.
  • Soulful: There is something magical about Weltevreden, from the art to the playground – I’m sure you too will experience the old-school charm that this one-of-a-kind estate has to offer.
