Tokara’s Delicatessen Remains A Family Favourite

Tokara’s Delicatessen remains a family favourite

Tokara’s deli has always been one of our family’s favourite places to visit in Stellenbosch with kids. Winter or Summer, there is always something to do for the kids and we love the ambiance of Delicatessen. It feels great to visit a sophisticated “grownup” venue with the benefit of child-friendly amenities.

Plenty of child-friendly venues are so child-friendly that, in fact, these venues can become quite “adult-unfriendly” as adults must sit on plastic, childproof furniture and be spectators to the children’s play area. Don’t get me wrong, we love these places and tend to visit these often to treat our kids. But sometimes we just want to treat ourselves and be able to enjoy a stunning interior without the fear of the kids wreaking havoc. Now that shouldn’t be too much to ask, eh?

Although Delicatessen is much more casual than the fine dine Tokara restaurant, it is stylish and not to be compared to your average child-friendly franchise restaurant with plastic jungle gyms and jumping castles. Big glass walls in the deli allow visitors to enjoy the view of the surrounding mountains, olive orchards and vineyards.  The aesthetics of the deli is as beautiful as its surroundings. From the artwork and decor right through to the deli products on display; the deli feels sophisticated in every way. Extra touches like tea served in glass teapots with a timer to time the prefect brew add an elegant quality to the deli.

The owner is an avid supporter of the fine arts and just outside the deli you will find an ever-changing sculpture exhibition showcasing work from some of the top artists in South Africa. Organic jungle gyms on the lawn complement the big sculptures and almost feel like an extension of the exhibition. The biggest attraction for kids remain the bird’s nest in the old oak tree. Children can climb into the nest and sit or lie down on leather pouffes.

In Winter, heated floors and a crackling fire warms up the whole deli and our absolute favourite space is the two long couches and pouffes in front of the fireplace. Children’s books that form part of the collection on the bookshelf and wooden crates filled with toys (mostly Melissa&Doug’s) should keep toddlers quite happy while you lounge on the couches or sit at your table.

Management of the deli was taken over by the same group who manages the renowned restaurant on the Tokara estate at the end of 2014. We were quite anxious to see what changes the new management will bring to the table and whether we would still feel the same way about our special haven. We were delighted that the status quo was pretty much maintained. Simple and effective changes that the management did bring about:

  • Wood-fired oven pizzas were added to the menu
  • New pizza, burger and craft beer evenings on Fridays and Saturdays in Summer
  • A bakery offering artisanal breads

The only thing we would now want to be changed is the closing time of 17:00 🙂  This is mostly due to our longing for a great space in Stellenbosch to relax after work. The tiny list that we do have of venues that are open for “sundowners” in the area is miserably short and we are hoping that one of the wine estates will notice the gap in the market for a coffee shop that is open ’til early evening.

Child-friendly amenities and attractions:

  • Kids’ menu
  • High chairs
  • Changing station in the bathroom
  • Jungle gyms and the bird’s nest
  • Children’s books on the bookshelf
  • Toys in wooden crates for toddlers to play with

Delicatessen at Tokara certainly gets our vote for breakfast with the kids at a sophisticated venue. The deli is also the perfect venue for small functions like baby showers.
