If you follow my blog closely, you’ll know that The Stellenbosch Mom aims to identify beautiful and intentional spots in and around our beautiful town. However, the blog is about more than that, because I also aim to shine a light on the positive things that are continuously happening in Stellenbosch. Even more so, if it involves people, places or initiatives that make a meaningful and significant difference in other people’s lives.
I’ve found that often, we are too busy to notice the good other people are doing (and in such close proximity to our own lives). And, as parents, I strongly believe that it is our responsibility to teach our children the importance of giving back and helping those in need. It is really one of the most important life skills we can equip them with.
That’s why I’m so excited to introduce you to One Heart for Kids, a non-profit organisation that focuses on primary school literacy and teaching kids about living healthy lifestyles and equipping young leaders to “run, read and lead” through sport.
Let me tell you a bit more about what they do and why they do it.
One Heart for Kids focuses on creating trail running opportunities for children and the youth to allow them to discover and develop a love for sport and the environment from a young age. They believe in developing healthy habits from a young age, so through the platform of running, kids learn to overcome obstacles, take care of their bodies and their minds and to participate and finish a run for their own goals (and that sports isn’t only about winning). They also combine sport with reading development, so the proceeds of every race event go to schools in need.
How to get involved
If you love running or cycling and have a passion and heart for children and education, One Heart for Kids invite volunteers to get involved at their trail running events. Or, if you’d like to make a monetary donation, here are their banking details:
