A Mini-bmx Track At Jonkershoek Café

A mini-bmx track at Jonkershoek Café

Lazy Sunday afternoon drives in Stellenbosch always end up in Jonkershoek for some or other reason… We have been fans of the Jonkershoek Café for years and it is at the top of our list for coffee shops to visit late afternoon on weekends. The coffee shop is a rare find when it comes to its down-to-earth setting between the trees and surrounding mountains.   It is a place where one feels close to nature PLUS the café serves some pretty decent food and drinks as many Jonkrshoek cyclists can vouch for.  I have been amazed at the trading hours of the café: When all other coffee shops in town and on wine estates seem to be closed for business late afternoon on weekends this café will probably still be open. I have once asked one of the ladies working at the café at what time they will be closing (it was already 18:00 on a Saturday evening!) and the reply was “at whatever time the last customers leave”.  Duh?!

The café is frequented by hikers and cyclists en route from the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve but is just as popular with families.  We often visit the café to enjoy the scenic drive to the venue and then to sit down for one of their awesome milkshakes.  A jungle gym was recently added to the grounds just outside the seating area along with another addition that really has me excited: a mini-BMX track for young cyclists. The going may get a bit rough and tough so do pack a spare change of clothes for your adventurous BMX’ers… Some photos of the café and outside seating area:

Why the Jonkershoek Café gets our child-friendly nod of approval?

  • It is outside, so kids can mess around
  • Bring along a blankie for baby to sit on and toys such as balls and bicycles for the older children so they can thoroughly enjoy the outdoors
  • The café is open outside of “normal trading hours” on Saturday and Sunday afternoons
  • Combine the food and drinks with a hike/ cycle in the Nature Reserve for a classic family day out

UPDATE August 2017: The coffee shop has changed management and the jungle gyms and bike track has been removed. For toddler bike tracks, try Specialized, RideIn or Dirtopia.

The new restaurant, At the End Jonkershoek is still a lovely venue for kids to play on the green grass.

  1. Sounds great. We love RideIn Cafe in Jonkershoek too, great kiddy snacks and playgym as well as really good coffee for mums and dads!

    1. Hi, ET. RideIn is one of our favourites too! We’re busy with an article on them which should be out next week. Please sign up for new posts to make sure you receive the article via email.
